A honest EV tyre recommendation
Some EV tyres give up to 30% more range in summer! But which tyres should you switch to? Eco tyres or regular tyres? Here comes an honest recommendation. If you drive an electric car in the Nordics, regular tyres may be the best choice for you. Read on and find out why.
Why regular tyres?
Both the NAF magazine MOTOR and the Swedish Vi Bilägere have previously conducted thorough tyre-versus-tyre tests and reached the same conclusion: you sacrifice safety on the road by choosing tyres with lower rolling resistance — which is exactly what eco tyres have.
Eco tyres give you greater range by having a shallower tread depth. This makes them roll more easily and produce less noise, which is great for light driving conditions. However, shallower tread depth can mean less grip when conditions are a bit more demanding, such as during heavy rain.
NAF discovered, among other things, that eco tyres lost grip on a gentle curve when the road surface was wet, and some of the tyres caused the car to slide significantly on the road.
Nordic conditions
When we at Elton read "gentle curves and wet road surfaces," we think of one thing: the classic Nordic summer. What could be more typical than a day that was supposed to be clear and warm turning rainy within minutes? That is why we recommend that you choose the tyres you yourself feel comfortable driving on, regardless of conditions.
If you like EV driving to be as stress-free and simple as EV charging, regular tyres may be the smart choice — even if the extra range that eco tyres offer is tempting.
Adapt to a driving style that suits your tyres
If you choose eco tyres, we are absolutely not going to stop you! These are great tyres designed to let your EV glide effortlessly down the motorway. But we do want to give you a couple of tips to make the summer season worry-free for those driving in Nordic conditions.
Electric cars are heavy, and less road grip means a longer braking distance. Remember to keep a little more distance from the car in front than usual.
Be aware of driving conditions and the tread depth on your tyres. Drive a little slower and make sure your tyre pressure is high.
Take it easy in the corners, and everything will run smoothly.
Whatever you choose, we hope you enjoy the extra range you get going forward. Maybe you'll drive somewhere completely new? Remember that wherever you are in the Nordics, you can charge and pay with Elton!
